Transit declaration
Transit declarations are submitted electronically via the EDI. When the information has been accepted, the case will be assigned a Main Reference Number (MRN), which serves as the ID number of the transit procedure. A print-out of the TAD, known as a Transit Accompanying Document is not required, however it can be an advantage to have it accompany the consignment.
The MRN or the barcode must however accompany the freight forwarder.
Standard procedure
Register the transit declaration via the EDI. The driver of the means of transport should contact the customs office of departure to present the goods and LRN, thus initiating the transit procedure. A guarantee for customs duties and other taxes should be provided to the customs office of departure. The customs officer locates the declaration and decides whether the transit can be started.
For the moment the customs officer will print the accompanying document, even though it is not mandatory to accompany the goods. At least MRN or barcode shall accompany the goods and be presented at the customs office of destination or to the authorised consignee.
Simplified procedure
The simplified procedure for transit can be used with the simplification known as “Authorised consignor”. It means that you register the transit declaration via EDI and it is released without presentation at the office of departure.
Once we have approved your transit declaration, you may print the TAD to accompany the consignment.
A print-out from the transit declaration is recommended in case the electronic system is unavailable at the customs office of destination or if the transit movement is to be ended by an authorised consignee.
Recommendation regarding printout of the accompany document
It is recommended that the TAD should be printed because:
- The authorised consignee can clearly see that the goods are intended for them.
- It is necessary in case of business continuity plan at the customs office of destination.
- It is needed during inspections by customs authorities, it clearly shows that the goods are under a transit procedure.
- The carrier can make notes in case of incidents, for exemple transhipment.
