Refunds for returned goods

When you, or your carrier, return goods purchased online, you may be refunded any customs duty, VAT or other fees paid to Swedish Customs.

New rules from 1 July 2026

From 1 July 2026, you can no longer apply for a refund of fees due to a return if the item is worth €150 or less.

If the customs declaration has an acceptance date before 1 July 2026, you can apply for a refund of fees. The application should be submitted within 90 days from when we received the declaration.

However, it is possible to apply for a refund from Swedish Customs if your item is defective. This applies to items worth €150 or less:

  • You must be able to present the goods at a customs clearance office.
  • You must be able to prove that the item were defective before it arrived in the EU.
  • You must not have used the item other than for necessary testing.
  • You must apply for a refund within 1 year from when we received the declaration, submit the documentation requested by Swedish Customs and wait for approval to return your item.
  • After approval by Swedish Customs, you must be able to prove that the item have left the EU or that the item are destroyed under customs supervision.

The established Swedish amount for €150 is SEK 1 655.30.

  • Customs identifier (Customs ID MRN or LRN code)
  • Proof that the consignee has received the returned item(s), e.g., a confirmation
  • Something to identify the returned item(s), e.g., an invoice or a purchase confirmation for your entire purchase.

Optional information

  • Bank information, to receive the funds by direct transfer, instead of receiving a paper cheque.

Important

Swedish Customs may request additional information.

New product as a replacement

If you received new unit, e.g., to replace goods that were broken in transit, you are also required to pay customs duty and VAT for the new unit. Instead, you can apply for and possibly receive a refund of the duties you paid to Swedish Customs for the first item. You will then need to prove that you have returned the first item to the seller.

Similar products

Check in your customs declaration that there are no more goods listed on the goods item where your goods are included. For example, if you ordered two pairs of the same pants but in different sizes, you cannot get back fees if you return one of the pairs. This is because it is not possible to make a refund for parts of a goods item.

Refund of the carrier fee

If the carrier has charged you an administrative or customs declaration fee, you should contact them to ask for a refund of these fees.
