Travelling with dog or cat
You must always report your dog or cat to Swedish Customs when you travel to Sweden. The animal must also meet the requirements for entry or exit.
Keep in mind that you may need to report your dog or cat even if you are only going on a holiday trip.
Before you report your dog or cat, you need to check the requirements for vaccination, health certificates and identification.
Travel to Sweden
From an EU country
If you are travelling with a dog or cat to Sweden from another EU country, you must report it to Swedish Customs online or at the border.
Report online
If you have registered online, select the green file or aisle – ‘nothing to declare’ when you arrive in Sweden. You must be able to present your registration number and the pet passport if requested by a customs officer.
To register your dog or cat on our website, you will need to:
- Reside in the EU.
- Travelling with your pet from another EU country.
- Have an EU pet passport.
- Make a notification before you cross the border.
You do not need to notify your dog or cat.
Report at the border
You make your notification by selecting the red file or the aisle in customs at the border crossing. There you will contact a customs officer.

From a non-EU country
If you are travelling directly from a country outside the EU, you must report your dog or cat at Arlanda or Landvetter. Special rules apply from Norway, Iceland and Switzerland.
Report at Arlanda or Landvetter
You make your notification by selecting the red file or the aisle in customs at the border. There you will contact a customs officer. You should do this regardless of whether you are travelling to Sweden or have sent the animal as freight.
Norway
If you are travelling from Norway, you do not need to report your pet if it is microchipped and has an EU pet passport or a Norwegian pet passport.
Iceland and Switzerland
If you are travelling from these countries, you must report your dog or cat at any border crossing in Sweden. Select the red file or the aisle of customs at the border, where you contact a customs officer.
Stopover in another EU country
For example, if you travel from a country outside the EU to Copenhagen and then move on from there to Sweden:
- Report the animal to Danish Customs in Copenhagen.
- Then report the animal to Swedish Customs online or at the border.

Travelling from Sweden
To another country
If you are travelling with an animal from Sweden to another country, within or outside the EU, you should check what rules apply for bringing animals into that country. Contact the relevant country's embassy or responsible authority in the country you are visiting.
No notification is required to Swedish Customs on exit.
Buying a dog or cat
From an EU country
If you buy a dog or cat from another EU country and bring it to Sweden, you do not have to pay any fees. However, you must always report the animal to Swedish Customs, either via the web or at the border.
If you send the animal as freight, you cannot register via the web.
From a non-EU country
When you buy, adopt or receive a dog or cat as a gift from a non-EU country, you may have to pay customs duties and VAT. How much you have to pay depends, among other things, on how much the animal has cost in purchases, or the value of the animal, and shipping costs.
Fees when shopping while travelling
You must also always report your dog or cat to the Swedish Customs at the border. Exceptions apply to Norway, as you must only report if the value exceeds SEK 3,500.
Rules for preventing diseases
Also keep in mind that there are rules to prevent the spread of diseases, especially rabies. Should you buy a dog from Norway, there are in some cases exemptions from rabies vaccination.
