Tax-free shopping in Sweden

If you live outside the EU and shop in Sweden, you can get a VAT refund when you return home. Here you can read about what applies to tax-free receipts.

When you shop in Sweden, you will pay VAT on your purchases. You can get a VAT refund from the shop afterwards if you have a tax-free receipt.

Requirements for tax-free shopping

To shop tax-free on your trip to Sweden, one of the following must apply:

  • You live in a country outside the EU.
  • You are moving from Sweden to a country outside the EU and plan to live there for at least 12 months.

The following criteria must be met:

  • You purchased the goods yourself.
  • Your transport the goods yourself.
  • The goods are unused.
  • The goods are not intended for commercial use.
  • The goods have a value of at least SEK 200 including VAT.
  • You remove the goods from the EU before the end of the third month after the month in which you purchased the goods. For example: if you purchased the goods on 10 January, 30 April is the final date to remove the goods.
  • Sweden is your last country to visit before leaving the EU.

If you are registered within the EU, you cannot shop tax-free or have your tax-free receipts stamped.

Procedure

Follow these steps to get a tax refund for goods you have purchased in Sweden or another EU country.

  1. Ask for a tax-free receipt

Ask for a tax-free receipt in the shop when you purchase an item. Ask in the shop if they are affiliated with tax-free shopping in Sweden.

  2. Have your tax-free receipt stamped

Before you leave Sweden, you must have your tax-free receipt stamped, for example at the airport.

Have your tax-free receipt stamped by a tax-free partner or Swedish Customs, depending on which country you purchased the goods in. If you have purchased the item
    – in Sweden or Denmark, the tax-free partner will stamp it
    – in another EU country, Swedish Customs will stamp it.

Please verify that the tax-free partner is open; if it is closed, Swedish Customs will stamp the receipt. Bear in mind that it may take some time to get the receipt stamped, so allow plenty of time.

    You must present
    – your tax-free receipt
    – your shop receipt
    – the item you have purchased
    – your travel documents
    – your passport.

  3. Where to get your stamp

Tax-free partners can be found at the airport terminal.

Tax-free receipts from Danish Pie VAT must be stamped by Swedish Customs.

At Arlanda, Swedish Customs has a service point in the arrivals hall at Terminal 5. If it is closed, you can go to our customs office located near Arlanda.

At Landvetter, you can get your receipts stamped at the information desk.

If you are leaving Sweden from somewhere other than Arlanda or Landvetter, you should check in advance how to get your receipts stamped.

  4. Claiming your refund

Please contact or visit your tax-free partner. They will process your refund.
