Fees when shopping while travelling
When you bring goods into Sweden from another country, you may have to pay charges depending on what you buy and whether you bring the goods from a country inside or outside the EU.
From an EU country
You are not liable to pay customs duties when you bring goods into Sweden from an EU country. In most cases you are also not required to pay VAT.
However, some goods are subject to specific rules, such as alcohol, tobacco, food and weapons.
From Åland or the Canary Islands
The Åland Islands and the Canary Islands belong to the EU but are outside the EU fiscal territory. When you bring goods you have bought from these territories, you do not pay customs duties, but you may have to pay VAT. Otherwise, the same rules apply as if you were shopping from a non-EU country.
From a non-EU country
You may have to pay customs duties and taxes when you buy goods to take home from your trip in a non-EU country.
You can bring goods duty and tax free for
- up to SEK 5,000 when travelling by air and ferry (in commercial traffic)
- up to SEK 3,500 for other modes of transport.
provided that you
- transport the goods personally
- not to resell the goods.
The monetary limits do not apply to excise goods, such as alcohol and tobacco.

Is the country part of the EU?
If you are unsure whether the country you are trading with is part of the EU or not, you can see a list of all EU countries or search for a specific country on the EU website.
