Animals and plants

When you bring live animals to Sweden, different rules apply for pets or other animals. There are also different rules depending on where the animal comes from. To bring certain plants into Sweden, you must have authorisation and certificates. The transport of some plants is completely prohibited.

Endangered animals and plants

Crossing Sweden’s border with endangered animals and plants (and products made from such animals and plants) is prohibited without special authorisation.

Among other things, there are a convention on international trade in endangered species – the Washington Convention, also known as the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). The convention is an international agreement between countries. It aims to save certain species of animals and plants from extinction.

Here, the EU and Sweden's regulations are applied and anyone found guilty of breaching the rules may be fined or imprisoned.

There are many importation rules for plants (as also for animals and other organisms that can seriously harm plants). Additionally, there are restrictions on the transport of soil and other growing media of organic origin.
