Future customs procedures
The road to a fully digital information exchange
The Union Customs Code, a new piece of customs legislation, entered into force on 1 May 2016. The purpose of the legislation is to align Union customs procedures, which with time will become simpler, more cost effective and faster.
All changes are guided by the following principles: all customs procedures should be digitalised, customs administration for companies and customs authorities in the EU should be simplified, customs administrations should be allowed to conduct inspections and increased efficiency of risk analyses. The changes will be implemented in three parts: new legislation, new IT systems and standardised work processes.
