Moving to Sweden from a country outside the EU

People moving to Sweden from a country outside the EU to settle may apply for relief from taxes and duties on personal belongings. You must always present your belongings to Swedish Customs when moving.
You present your goods and apply for relief by submitting an import declaration using the Single Administrative Document, SAD below. Those not wishing to fill out an import declaration themselves may choose to employ an authorised representative.

You must also complete the form called “Declaration for obtaining relief from customs duty and tax on personal belongings" and submit it together with the SAD. You must be able to provide satisfactory evidence for the information submitted in the declarations.

Codes for applying for duty relief on the import declaration
Box 36, preferential code: 100
Box 37, second sub-box, procedure code: C 01

There are different regulations in place concerning relief from taxes and duties, depending on whether you are immigrating or returning to Sweden. The following examples of information can be used to demonstrate where you and your family have had your normal home during your stay outside the EU:

  • registration with the county in your non-EU country of residence
  • work and/or residence permits
  • rental contracts/lease papers for your home
  • proof of immigration to Sweden

The following documents can be used to confirm information about your family´s personal belongings:

  • purchase documents
  • foreign insurance documents
  • registration and/or car insurance documents (for vehicles)
  • freight documents

What if I have a car with me when moving?

Both people immigrating and people returning to Sweden may be eligible under certain circumstances for relief from duties and taxes on cars and other vehicles such as motorcycles, boats and caravans.
