More effective methods deliver better results
In order to live up to the goals Parliament and Government have set for Swedish Customs we need to continuously develop our working methods. We are increasingly concentrating on intelligence, risk analysis and preventative work so as not to interrupt goods flow unnecessarily. Examples of preventative efforts include information, education, electronic services for dealing with customs procedures and certification of companies.
The Stairway is a customs system which provides services, good quality, efficiency and security for trade with countries outside the EU. The system was developed by Swedish Customs in the beginning of the new millennium. In partnership with private enterprise and other EU countries, Swedish Customs has developed a method for certification that is based on companies doing their own quality certification of their customs and security procedures. By certifying companies and thereby approving a high level of quality in their goods and information flows, Swedish Customs makes customs procedures simpler and border passage easier for companies. AEO, Authorised Economic Operator, was introduced on 1 January 2008. This means that all member countries are using the same certification programme to ensure both high quality customs procedures and security for European companies. Certification applies in all member countries within the EU.
As part of constant improvements to working methods, Swedish Customs employs technology within Law Enforcement, such as X-ray equipment and fibre optics. We are also constantly seeking to develop new and effective ways of working with our drug detector dogs.
